S-Pedelecs.

Three variations. Three differences. One enforcement term - e-bike.
We explain to you the difference of the individual electric bicycles and what advantages and disadvantages the differently installed
engines have.

Pedelec

The pedelec supports the rider through its built-in motor only when the rider is also active pedaling. However, this only happens up to a maximum speed of 25mk/h. From this point on, the bike can only be moved forward faster by muscle power.

s-Pedelec

An S-Pedelec is able to support the rider up to a speed of 45 km/h. Therefore, there is also an insurance and helmet requirement. Active insurance coverage is indicated by a small license plate. Depending on the local law, a minimum age of 15 or 16 years and the possession of a driver's license class AM is required to drive an S-pedelec.

The transport of children or the use of child trailers is restricted with this bike. It is also not allowed to use the S-pedelec on bike paths, against a one-way street or through a public park.

E-Bike

The e-bike has nothing to do with a conventional bicycle, as it moves without the user cycling. A throttle at the grip allows you to drive the e-bike just like a small motorcycle or moped, and speeds range from 20 km/h - 45km/h, depending on the e-bike category. Different rules apply on the road for each speed:

Up to 20km/h: An insurance license plate and at least a moped license are required. A helmet is optional but highly recommended and the use of bike paths is allowed if they are open for e-bikes.

Up to 25km/h: The same requirements apply as for the 20km/h variant, but helmets are mandatory.

Up to 45km/h: An insurance license plate, as well as a class AM driver's license, and the helmet are mandatory. The use of bicycle paths, even if they are approved for e-bikes, is no longer permitted.

Which motor is best suited to my pedelec?

Each type of engine has its advantages and disadvantages. It is best to try out a bike to determine which variation best suits your needs. Nevertheless, the following overview  might help with the first determination.

JD Europe Components GmbH has a wide range of engines to choose from. They each differ in the ways that they fit the bicycle and in their configuration. There are front-, middle-, and rear-motors. Our most extensive experience is with front motors, shortly followed by the others.

Apart from some older 24V systems, newer motors run on 36V. Within each type of motor, there can be a lot of differences, which should be considered when ordering the motor. There are different axle lengths, mounts for brakes, and mounts for sprockets (only rear motors), connections for the motor cable, and other special features like the silence system (marked by a J) or motors where the controller is already integrated.

    The Front Motor

The front motor is the least expensive type of motor with the great advantage that it can be integrated onto almost all bikes, no design-related special features are necessary beforehand. In addition, the front motor always supports the wheel directly, which makes starting very pleasant.

         Vorteile

    • Can be retrofitted in almost all bikes

    • Inexpensive motor variant

    • Works with any type of gears and brakes

         Nachteile

    • The increased weight in the front wheel can negatively influence the steering behavior

    • The fork is subjected to greater load

    • Can loose traction easily on wet or slippery surfaces

    • The combination with a torque sensor is very difficult

    • Tire change in the front is more complex

    The Middle Motor

The mid-motor requires a specific frame shape and retrofitting is most often not possible. On the other hand, the mid-motor offers the best riding experience, as the drive is directly connected to the bottom bracket. In addition, the range achieved with a mid-motor is higher than with front or rear motors, as it works more efficiently. Normally, a torque sensor is integrated directly into the motor, which makes it easy to calculate how much assistance is currently needed. The weight distribution is optimal, as the motor forms a good center of gravity, which results in a very pleasant riding experience overall.

         Vorteile

    • Very centered, low center of gravity

    • Very good traction, without the risk of spinning

    •  Very harmonious, user-oriented support

    • Is compatible with all gear groups

    • Tire changes work quite normally

         Nachteile

    • No retrofitting possible

    • Significant more expensive

    • Sprocket and chain wear out faster

    The Rear Motor

The biggest advantage of a rear drive is the possibility of recuperation, the recovery of energy through the engine brake. Like the front motor, the rear motor provides direct assistance when starting. Like the front motor, the rear motor can be retrofitted.

         Vorteile

    • Energy recovery and thus higher range possible

    • Can be retrofitted in almost all bikes

    • Comparatively quiet

    • No problems with traction

         Nachteile

    • The bike is very rear-heavy, in combination with a
carrier battery and saddlebags, the bike can quickly tip over

    • Very cumbersome rear tire change

    • Less power than the mid-motor

    Akkus.

Our rechargeable batteries are diverse and available for every use in different power ratings, nominal voltages and amp-hours.

The batteries are available with nominal voltages of 24 volts, 36 volts or 40 volts, and they also have different power ratings, specified in ampere-hours. For very old systems, you may see the designation HDQ or i2C, whereby our replacement batteries come equipped for both systems. All batteries are equipped with lithium-ion cells and have a Battery Management System (BMS).

    Displays.

Displays are a must-have for all users in order to be able to determine the speed and support for every riding experience.

There are two special system specifications to consider for the displays: HDQ or I2C. With I2C there is also the distinction in UF946 (White Port) or UF1497 (Black Port). In addition, there are Silence systems with the marking 'J' in the product name, as well as Can-Bus systems. The displays are adapted for the different voltages. Suitable software can be requested from JD Service. A tool (Kit 3) and the LogiX PC software are required for programming.
